To show interaction between characters in The Great Gatsby, I created a postcard hypothetically sent from Daisy to Gatsby, inspired by the scene in the novel in which Daisy receives an upsetting letter shortly before her wedding to Tom Buchanan. Because the reader does not know the contents of this letter, there is room to consider what might have happened beyond the text. Based on the events of the book, this postcard imagines what Daisy might have responded to Gatsby as she struggles to reconcile her affection for him with her desire for the kind of financially stable marriage Tom can provide. An activity such as creating this postcard would allow students to think creatively while also making informed inferences about the characters and the subtext of the novel.
"June 1919
I hope this letter finds you well--I'm not sure I have the correct address. Tomorrow I am to marry Tom Buchanan, although I received your letter and I think of you often. I am so very sorry that things have gone as they have, but I believe I must follow the path my life is taking. Have a wonderful life but do not forget about me.
Fondly,
Daisy"
